“Pressure cleaning” gets used as a catch-all, but there are really two very different methods behind it — high-pressure cleaning and soft washing. Using the wrong one on the wrong surface is the single most common way roofs and render get damaged. Here’s how to tell them apart and which your home needs.
What Is High-Pressure Cleaning?
High-pressure cleaning does exactly what it sounds like: it uses a powerful jet of water to physically blast dirt, grime and stains off a surface. It’s fast, effective and perfect for hard, durable surfaces — concrete driveways, paths, pavers and brick.
The catch is that all that force is too aggressive for delicate surfaces. On a roof, it can crack or dislodge tiles, strip protective coatings, and force water up under the tiles where it doesn’t belong.
What Is Soft Washing?
Soft washing uses low pressure combined with specialised cleaning solutions. Instead of blasting growth off the surface, the treatment kills mould, mould spores, moss and lichen at the root, then gently rinses everything away.
Because it relies on the treatment rather than brute force, soft washing is safe for delicate surfaces — roof tiles, render, painted walls, cladding and weatherboard. It also tends to keep surfaces cleaner for longer, because it kills the growth rather than just knocking the top off it.
Which Surface Needs Which?
Use soft washing for:
- Roofs (tile, concrete and metal)
- Render and painted walls
- Cladding and weatherboard
- Anything fragile, coated or painted
Use high pressure for:
- Concrete driveways and paths
- Pavers and exposed aggregate
- Brick and other hard, durable surfaces
The simple rule: if a surface is hard and durable, high pressure is usually fine. If it’s delicate, coated or painted — like your roof or render — it needs a soft wash. A good cleaner chooses the method to suit the surface, not the other way around.
Why It Matters For Your Roof
This is where homeowners get caught out. A cheap operator blasting a roof with high pressure might make it look clean today, but the damage — stripped coating, cracked tiles, water ingress — can cost far more than the clean saved. That’s why we only ever use a gentle soft wash on roofs.
Not Sure Which You Need?
That’s what we’re here for. We’ll assess your property and use the right method for every surface — soft wash where it needs care, high pressure where it can take it.
